Originally established in 1636 (the first year of the
Chongde reign of the Qing Dynasty) and commissioned by Hong Taiji (Emperor
Taizong of Qing), it is also known as the "Imperial Temple"
(Huangsi). It is a renowned Tibetan Buddhist monastery—specifically of the
Gelug (Yellow Hat) school—in Northeast China. As the first imperial Tibetan
Buddhist temple in the region during the Qing Dynasty, it blends Han-style
palatial architecture with Tibetan temple styles and features a distinctive
design of yellow glazed tiles with green borders. It once housed a massive
cast-iron bell, creating the celebrated spectacle known as the "Ringing
Bell of the Imperial Temple," which was ranked among the "Eight Great
Sights of Shengjing."
