Unlike the standalone statues of Mao Zedong found elsewhere at the time, the statue in Zhongshan Square is surrounded by a sculptural ensemble featuring 58 figures representing workers, peasants, and soldiers, as well as a massive group sculpture depicting the Headquarters of the Northeast Bandit-Suppression Command. Named "Long Live the Victory of Mao Zedong Thought," the statue was completed in 1969 after a three-year construction period.
